Marlow's encounter with the Accountant elicits astonishment and amazement from him, seeing an "unexpected elegance" in such a so-called dirty and uncivilized environment. The juxtaposition of the previous scene, the Circle of Death, and Marlow meeting the Accountant exemplify the extremely different views he has on each occurrence. Marlow is able to relate to and 'take a stance' regarding his feelings toward the Accountant because he is a familiar figure but Marlow is unable to draw conclusions about the natives because of the unfamiliarity.
