- Marlow sets the wilderness up to be an un-escapable monster getting the best of Kurtz
- A soon as he puts his binoculars down the magnified vision "leaped away" similar to the thoughts he was focusing on
- Mr. Kurtz seems mentally much stronger then anyone else and knows what he is doing if he can survive in such conditions - contradicts Marlows opinion, however Kurtz is very ill but is still seen as a huge figure to the natives
- All of a sudden Marlow wants nothing to do with Mr. Kurtz "I suppose it did not occur to him that Mr. Kurtz was no idol of mine." lowering Kurtz to make himself better/higher - this is a huge change for Marlow as Kurtz used to be a fascination to Marlow
- Really bad conditions in the heart of darkness - almost drives the Kurtz's crew crazy -- sleep deprived, no medicine, total isolation from normal society -- completely abandoned
