In this section, Milton gives the devil many human and sympathetic qualitites. What are these and what may be their significance? Why do you think Milton does this?
Milton characterizes the Devil as proud, corageous, and vengeful so that the audience can more readil relate and sympathize with the devil, perhaps to show that the devil is not completely evil at this point in the poem- that there is a little human in the devil, and a little devil in all humans. Furthering this notion of the connection between the two, another response believed a major similarity is that the devil is able to make even the worst of situations liveable, something that humans are able to do. Also, by making us sympathize with the devil, Milton justifies the evil and makes God look like the bad guy, something that makes the story enjoyable as it is unlike any other. It also serves as caution to humans. Ambition and desire for power, which led the devil to his downfall, are very present in humans too and could just as easliy lead to their own downfalls.
