For the "conservation on paper," my generative question based on lines 242-270 was, "Are the devils truly happy to be in "the soil, the clime...That we must change for heaven"? Or are they making the best of the situation? Are they being spiteful to God, or do they really think Hell is better than heaven?"
We came to the conclusion that although Hell is definitely nothing compared to Heaven, the devils are willing to use towards their advantage. The devils call Hell a "mournful gloom, yet they are also pleased to finally be given independence and the ability to rule themselves without God. Also, they devils prefer their new situation, since it is "Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heav'n". Satan also was much too powerhungry for his own good. He much prefers this situation in Hell, since he is given much more power than he was as God's brightest angel. Since he was too powerhungry to remain in heaven as second-best, he was shunned to rule in Hell. Yet Satan prefers this, because he is given complete reign in Hell, even if it is much worse than Heaven.
